1. Obituary. BROOKVILLE, Jan 16 - Mrs. Elizabth Mumford, one of the state's oldest living natives, died this morning in her home on Craig Street. She celebrated her 103rd birthday in November. Mrs. Mumford had 53 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. A daughter of Robert and Margaret (Steel) McManigle, she was born in Brookvile on November 18, 1852, in a hotel located on the present site of the Auto Service Station on Main Street, at that time just a dirt road leading through a forest. There were only five houses in Brookville, three of which were cabins occupied by Indians. Mrs. Mumford lived her entire life in Brookville. On March 7, 1870, she married Theodore Harrison Mumford, a veteran of the Civil War. Enlisting in Crawford County in 1862, he was mustered into service at Meadville on Feb ruary 21, 1863, in Company B, 18th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalrymen, and was honorably discharged July 21, 1865, at Cumberland, Maryland. Mr. Mumford died at the age of 68. Mrs. Mumford was a member of the Zion Methodist Church for 91 years, the longest membership in the history of the church. She fell at the age of 100 and broke her hip, but was able to walk again despite her advanced years. Thirteen of her seventeen children survive, Daughters are Mrs. Thomas Mohney of Oil City, Mrs. Bert Buzzard, Mrs. Delia Stahlman and Mrs. Ida Jackson of Brookville, Mrs. Fred Lindgren, Mrs. Sarah Bowley and Mrs. Margaret Wicks of Ridgway. Sons surviving are Walter, Russell, Louis, Mack and James of Brookville and Harrison of Ridgway.
