General Notes:
1. James was the progenitor of the Babcock family in Westerly and Stonington. He first appeared in Portsmouth, Rhode Island in 1642. There he held the office of Commissioner from 1656 to 1659 and was by occupation a blacksmith and gunsmith. He and his family removed to Westerly, Connecticut shortly after 1664, having sold his Portsmouth house and land to Thomas Fish. During 1670 he gave testimony, calling his age 58, his son James 29, and his son John 26.
James married Sarah Brown before 1641 in Or Near Portsmouth, Newport County, RI. (Sarah Brown was born about 1614 in Or Near Essex, England Probably and died in 1665 in Or Near Portsmouth, Newport County, RI.)
